Camp Verde New Thrift Store Finds

December 24th, 2009

Today I went to my wonderful nearby thrift store, called, strangely, New Thrift Store (in Camp Verde, AZ, along Highway 260). This is honestly the coolest thrift shop I’ve ever been to outside of those Savers stores and this one HUGE Goodwill in Seattle. Nice people, funky wares, fun background music, interestingly personable displays. Tons of stuff packed into a few rooms. Definitely worth stopping by. Next time you are passing by, on your way home, to see friends or visit FoxyBingo , drop in.

You are bound to find something delightful!

I found myself some lovely, inexpensive goodies:

  • Warm fuzzy jammies $2.50
  • Fabric to make my meditation cushion $1.50
  • Fabric to make into a bedroom curtain $1.50
  • Warm microfiber sweats to wear around the house $2.50
  • 3 comfortable long sleeved shirts that actually look good on (always a bonus) $2 each
  • A tree branch lopper (these scrubby, thorny bushes around the house need work)$1
  • Homeopathic Foot Massager/Heater (so I can keep my feet warm and enjoy a massage while at the computer in my cold kitchen) $4.50
  • A nice REI sunhat $1.50
  • AND a ’skiing’ workout machine thing I can use while on the computer or watching DVDs $12 (I’ve been looking for something like this)
  • A large-slice ‘bagel’ toaster $2.50

I felt so happy while shopping. All the employees are friendly and helpful; they seem to like their jobs. I love that the thrift store has a “happy hour” from 3-6pm each day, where everything is half off. There are interesting specials going on all year, like an extra 15% off on your birthday, and a White Elephant Gift Exchange after the holidays (bring in something you got that you don’t like and exchange it for something from the store worth up to $5).

There is a large and comfortable dressing room for trying on clothes, a “Guy Stuff” section with electronics and sports, tons of inexpensive furniture, neat craft supplies in zip locks, and a large salvage type area outside where one can hunt around for all sorts of bizarre, possibly useful items (like my workout machine). Everything is extremely well labeled, often humorously so. Great store!

I like buying used, bottom line. I like knowing that these are things that won’t be in the trash stream and can continue to be enjoyed. I got good things for super cheap prices, and I can feel completely unguilty about my spending. :)

I’d go for the Happy Hour!!!!!

I never go any other time - I likee half price.

I am happy to report that I am using and loving all my new things. Esp the jammies, the workout machine and the foot massager. I hung up the curtain fabrics - things are looking better in here all the time.

I have my White Elephant Gift all prepared by the door for my next visit to the store. I will be excited to unload the thing and get a fun freebie. Probably more fuzzy PJs.

I love the sound of this Thrift Store.. I wish I had one near me. We have alot of Goodwill stores here in San Diego, and they all sell their “good” stuff online and leave very little of the true treasures for their store shoppers.. How disappointing :(

I’m sorry to hear that about your local GoodWill, mom. They seem to go going down a selfish route - that instead of providing nice things for people to buy cheaply, they want to make more money. That’s annoying - I’ve given thousands of dollars in products to GoodWill over the years…if the idea is in spreading ‘good will’ among men, then hoarding their good stuff isn’t exactly what I intended for my items.

Maybe its time for me to stop bringing them my things. There are plenty of other charities and thrift shops to donate to. I liked in Crestline that I had a Humane Society thrift store for my donations.

Here I can bring things to New Thrift Store. It’s not a charity, but my goods will help the community (which is depressed).

Do you shop on the Online GoodWill site?

I’ve been to the thrift store many times and I love it too. I agree to your point that the employees are always so nice. I live in phoenix and I go up north often and always make it a point to stop in the the new thrift store. It is a diamond in the rough of camp verde where I recommend anyone who is passing through needs to stop at.

Navy, that is awesome that you stop in and support the New Thrift Store when you pass though. Camp Verde needs more love! Supporting small communities is so important.

I visited my fave shop again today. I got a super little space heater for $5, a set of supima queen-size unfitted cotton sheets for $3, and some fuzzy Disney PJ bottoms ($1.50). I have a thing for PJs lately, and soft cotton sheets are a weakness of mine. :)

    Hi Jill,

I really enjoyed meeting you and sharing with you the “behind-the-scene” view of The New Thrift Store. We really are dedicated to keeping as much as possible out of the trash stream, but as you saw, it’s a huge battle. I also really appreciated the time you spent talking with me, sharing your thoughts and allowing me to bounce ideas off of you. We have taken giant steps foreward regarding the use change of our front deck area from “Big Mess” to “Exciting Events” area. For about a week & a half we had a huge mark-down sale on everything outside, the on Sunday evening just before we closed a man came in and offered to buy everything!!! Can you believe it?!?!?! We now will have to develop a new salvage area out back. I think this will work ever better. Stop by when you get a chance and see the progress.

    Take care and best regards,

    Pamela

Looks pretty cool, have been doing this for years, but only recently discovered that it actually had a specific name. Lots of good thrift shops in our area, some real bargains on offer.

  9. HippyGeek on March 7, 2010 8:53 pm

Thanks for the update, Pamela! I can’t wait to come by and see your new events area out front. That will so wonderful for the community. Congrats on the everything-must-go sale, too. lol. That’s pretty sweet. I wonder what he ended up doing with everything?

Confused, I know what you mean - there are tons of great thrift shops to explore in the area. What are some of your other favorites?

Hehe - When I was in the Staes - I also visited the same store. What a coincidence….

The clothes that most people bring to a thrift store are not usually the outcasts of their closets. People either donate or sell their old clothes to thrift stores because they no longer fit the clothes, or because they need to make room for new clothes. The clothes most people chose to bring to thrift stores are usually decent; otherwise, many folks would throw the clothes into the trash bin. Some people have a hard time letting go of clothes they know they’ve spent and good dollar to buy, so those clothes stay in zippered bags in the closet until some family member halls them away to the consignment shop or thrift store.

People love to shop where bargains are present. With that in mind, when a person finds a great thrift store, the word will travel fast, giving you free exposure that will put your thrift store in the mouths of others. And let’s not forget the recent media coverage on thrift stores, and how many people are turning to second-hand stores for purchases.

Thrift stores are my latest therapies. :) I went to my first thrift store about 6 months ago, and since then, I’ve always been eager to come and visit more. I never knew that such superb finds can be found here!

The fact of the matter is thrift stores are amazing places to find great clothes at extremely low prices. For many people thrift store shopping is almost a way of life. Thrift stores have given birth to a kind of thrift store chic that many people find extremely fashionable. I find that when someone does not want to shop at a thrift store it is more a matter of pride than anything else. Do not let brand snobbery rob you from looking great for less. In the end, if you look great, nobody is going to care if they came from a thrift store or not. Thrift stores are quickly becoming the best way to find great outfits.

Thrifting is not only great for my wallet, it’s good for the environment (clothes get a second chance instead of going to the landfill), charities get much needed money, and I finally have enough clothes that I can experiment with having an actual style. I’m much more likely to try new things if they don’t cost me very much.
    It’s a win-win-win-win situation.

Thrift stores require a lot of rummaging, which can be time-consuming and tiring. Often they smell musty or are dusty, so if you have allergies, be sure to spend only short amounts of time visiting. Also, you won’t always find an item in your size. You won’t always find something you like, either. If you are someone who loves to rummage, would sacrifice a half day in pursuit of a bargain and enjoys the thrill of the hunt as much as the kill, then thrift store shopping is for you! You must have perseverance, determination, patience and grit.

I find great quality clothing that’s still in great shape at our Salvation Army. I also buy clothing and alter it, even turning large men’s t-shirts into dresses and skirts. There’s actually a huge community of craft-y people who are “repurposing” used clothing. It’s fun to take somebody’s discards and turn them into something new and stylish!

  20. pat on January 10, 2011 7:48 pm

Pick up anything that catches your eye and possibly try it on in the dressing room. If you don’t like the idea of putting someone else’s clothes on before washing them, buy whatever you think will look nice, wash the items at home, and re-donate them as needed. Also you should know that the clothing item may look better on you then it does on the hanger! So try something on, you might like it. Experiment with clothes; put different things together.

Thrift stores are good also if you want to find any gems like brand names. They’re insanely cheap like mentioned in the articleThrift stores should be more known. They are just great. Many people don’t take advantage of them enough.

  22. bill on January 20, 2011 3:46 am

In fact buying at thrift sale is always more advantageous. It is not that you get only used stuff. They also sell many pieces those that have not been used by the owners or the stuff that has not been sold.
