Things To Do Near Wilderness Lakes RV Park (Thousand Trails)

April 11th, 2009

Note - this is a list to myself of things I might like to look at while here.

1. There are a ton of interesting activites near Diamond Valley Lake - see my article on that

2. Old Town Temecula. Antiques and boutiques, places to eat

3. Wineries in Temecula and Escondido

4. 6 mile hiking and equestrian trail at Lake Skinner

5. See Lake Elsinore - Santa Ana Mts, Bear Canyon Loop Trail - 6.5 mile moderate loop. Or Morgan Trail, 8 miles out and back - here is a trail report. Also, and most likely: Chiquito Canyon, 1.5 hours West Marina area, right along the lake

6.  Santa Rosa Plateau Hike - 6.5 mile loop: I did about 8 miles of hiking in this park and can vouch that it’s lovely, eclectic, and peaceful. Well worth enjoying. Just pick any trailhead and create your own loop from it

7. 1/2 mile loop around Wilderness Lakes RV Resort. There is also a pond and pasture area to increase the distance of the run/walk. Tons of fantastic birding in this protected resort

8. Santa Margarita Ecological Preserve - must arrange via docents only

9. Check out Vail Lake Campround - a membership campground that I would like to look at

10. Winchester Cheese Company - I enjoyed tasting the cheese samples here! Free tastings, a store to make direct cheese purchases, and an outside paddock to greet and pet friendly goats

11. Palomar Observatory

12. Lake Perris Trails. Nine mile hike and bike trail around lake. There are also scenic overlook trails in a few spots

13. Roy W. Kabian Memorial Park - Their web site says, “1 acre of developed park space, and another 639 acres of hiking and equestrian trails through the hills of Quail Valley”

14. Here is a misc list PDF of short park hikes in the area

defiantely go with the winery, it will be needed after all of the walking that you are planning on doing.

Ha! True that. I did do the Cheese Company, the Wineries and the walk around the Santa Rosa Plateau. Not all on the same day. :-)

The wineries….oh boy. Very fun stuff. It’s like a mini-Napa in Temecula!

This is a really great list! I’ve lived in So Cal my entire life and I haven’t done a few of these things - definitely putting them on my to-do list
