We Have to Fly, But Now We Hates It

August 28th, 2008

I unfortunately have to fly next month. We officially now hate flying, so we tried hard to come up with an alternate plan:

  • Driving from CA to FL was out - too much time, too much hassle, too much gas.
  • We figured we’d try a sleeper car on the train. Well, there we inexplicably would have to go from FL via CHICAGO to CA, adding a lot of time to the trip. Plus the sleeper compartments cost about the same as a vacation on a cruise ship. So, no go.
  • Then we saw the first class flight tickets also cost more than a cruise.
  • We even considered renting an RV to drive back so we would only have to fly one way…then got wrapped back up in the ungodly expensive gas situation. One can’t win.

So, yeah, we gave up and bought plane tickets on Expedia, which sneakily tacks on booking fees and massive taxes. We’re forced to change planes in Atlanta and can’t even sit together on the last leg to FL. We have a three hour stop-over in Atlanta too. I hope it’s got WIFI, or decent shops.

I am afraid to check and see which airlines we are stuck with. Some are stingier than others: I wonder if we will be charged now for water and coffee. If so, all the more reason to just get drunk on tiny bottles of wine in-flight. I am by now trained to bring my own darned pillow, so they can’t nickel and dime me there.

Am NOT looking forward to this. I always catch a flu bug when I fly. I’m going to try really hard not to this time, even if it means wearing gloves and a mask. Sheesh. Flying. Bah.

Are any airlines more decent than the others at this point? Anyone ever take a sleeper car on a train? When will we be able to just beam to our destinations?

Oddly, I still enjoy flying. I’m weird, I guess. The hassles just don’t bother me and normally I get to buy some overpriced food past security that I wouldn’t normally buy. I get a kick out of that. I like the hunt of trying to find a decently priced ticket with normal arrival and departure times.

I bring books with me to read & crochet to do. I don’t have a lot of free time to read a book so I do that on a plane flight or while waiting at the airport. I also like to people watch. :)

You have such a great attitude! It’s inspiring.

I used to enjoy the time to read, but with people being crammed into the center seats, it’s less relaxing than it used to be. And I really do end up getting sick after flying (hey - you’ve SEEN that happen to me!), which makes me feel such dread.

I’ve never gone 1st Class. Would love to get out of steerage one day. :D

Yes, I’ve seen you sick. It was a bit scary actually. Incredibly, I didn’t pick up what you had rooming with you for the entire DC trip.

First class would be fun, but only if someone else pays. LOL It’s WAY too expensive.

I also admire your attitude, Jeanne. For me, traveling with two little kids, long delays are only annoying, not filled with people-watching goodness!

Maybe it depends on how often one flies? Or maybe where one is at in life. I USED to enjoy traveling to far off places.

Now I just prefer a nice, old fashioned road trip. Within a 5 hour driving radius. :)

I’m just hoping that we don’t end up spending our vacation sleeping in the Atlanta airport while a huricane shuts down the airport in Orlando. That would suck. A lot. Even with WiFi. :-)
