THIS is why I do the Low Carb
August 16th, 2008
Last night I was at my local farmers’ market, talking with a candles vendor about how I was on low carb. She looked at me and said, “You look great - why do YOU need to be on low carb?”
….well, it’s because if I am not low carbing, I am about 15-20 pounds heavier, even though I am very physically active. But I didn’t say that - just told her thank you and said it’s about eating healthier overall.
I just thought that was nice for my ego and helps validate why I am making this effort. I guess low carbing is working, then.
Which is nice, as it’s not the easiest plan to follow in our comfort-food oriented, starchy world.
Has anyone else had this happen?

We’ve got a friend that has just lost 35kg (70lbs) over about 20 weeks by going low carb. She is so so happy
Hi Stephen! Low carb takes a lot of mindfulness. You can eat as much as you want, and it’s really all delicious, fresh and healthy food. But the problem is that most of the ‘comfort food’ we grew up with, at least here in the US, are starch-based. Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread. Cakes and cookies and chips. Sometimes I just want to sit down with a roll of cookie dough!
But then I remember how much i enjoy being healthy and looking fit. As your friend discovered, low carbing really does work, with so little effort (besides that of awareness).
It just has to be a lifestyle and not a diet. Diets don’t work anyway.
I started going low carb AND high fat when I joined an Irish-based gym, Educogym, in Los Angeles. Educogym advocates eating lot of fatty meats and only green vegetables. I had been trying to lose the “last 10″ after losing 40 of 50 lbs I gained years ago. It worked! I was going insane eating all of that meat and nothing but green veggies, so I modified it and incorporated some dairy (I was lactose-intollerant before giving up wheat), colorful veggies and fruit. I’ve kept the weight off and feel great.
