Where I Waste Time Online

August 6th, 2008

I might have a huge list of bookmarked sites, but can really count on my toes the places I frequently waste time for fun. Here they are, in no particular order of useful wastefulness:

  1. I Can Has Cheesburger? Yes, I heart LOLcats. This is my sure-fire default time waster when I need an emotional funny. Look at the subtitle on HippyGeek for pete’s sake.
  2. CuteOverload.com - the site creators own a little piece of my soul, I swear it. Not usually one for the sappy, I can’t say enough about arms up, eye capsules and nosicles. Who knew there was a science behind the making of cute?
  3. Critical Reviews of my Favorite TV shows. It’s not enough to recap Buffy, Battlestar Galactica or Xena - I want a full psychological analysis. So give me Billy Doux, MikeJer, Sarah Stegall or Whoosh over the IMDB any day. And then there’s Ain’t It Cool News, which I sometimes love (and often wonder why I bother). Also, Whedonesque never gets old.
  4. Web Pages that Suck. This falls only slightly under the category of work. It’s so much fun to see this guy professionally rip apart other websites that I can’t help checking in for pure entertainment value. Here’s to Mystery Meat and Ozzy Osbourne!
  5. The forums at BellaOnline. It’s truly unbelievable how many hours I usefully waste here. As of today, I have 5538 forum posts, some of which are quite long and involved. Granted, yes, I work for them, but STILL. No one asks me to post there. And yet I do. About everything. It’s almost embarrassing what I cheerfully disclose to the world on those forums. I better never run for office. :-)

Where else do I roam? I surf the Inland Empire on Craigslist. I read reviews at Amazon and subscribe to a bunch of yoga blogs. I also read blogs about blogs, poke around Facebook and shop for houses on Realtor.com. That last is a true guilty pleasure.

Where are YOUR big time wasters? Do you prefer to read articles, blog posts, reviews, or mess with large timesucking apps like Facebook and MySpace?

You know what’s funny? I posted earlier about Facebook being too cluttered, and one of their applications is where I waste a good bit of time. It’s called Mob Wars, and it really doesn’t take any thought. You basically just have to check on it to see if you’ve been attacked and spend your money.

I’ll also admit to being addicted to watching my website and blog stats. I use StatCounter for my website (website is http://www.blakesdesigns.com/store), and the standard WordPress stuff for the stats there.

I *LOVE* ICHCB!!!!! Bad bad you for showing me that site. hehehe

    I can has time waster.

Yes, Jeanne, we can has time sucking black hole of doom! Bwahahaha.

I figure if i get sucked in to lolcats, everyone else should get stuck in there too.

Where else do you get lost?

Yeah, Blake, looking at one’s own stats is dangerously addictive. I make sure to waste a good chunk of time on Google analytics every morning, with coffee. At least I can pretend it’s “work.”

Now with facebook, there are so many neato things to do there that it becomes info overload. I have learned to cut back! :)

When I feel the need to break away from work I tend to go to my RSS feeds - Google Reader. Or ESPN.com is a favorite destination. And for breakfast I usually watch videos at NFL.com.

The only time I go to Facebook is when someone has added me or something and I get an email. Facebook just hasn’t caught my attention.

However, Twitter is running all the time - with the ‘twhirl’ AIR client. That isn’t much of a distraction for me though. I might spend 5-10 minutes a day, max, reading and sending twits.

Ok, now that I think about it (a tiny bit). I do spend a good amount of time in IMs and also I’ve developed a bad habit of refreshing Twitter to see what everyone is doing. LOL

I have not heard of the first two. I spent time lurking at a board that I have not signed up at, not sure why, but probably because unsure of a screen name and also they use terms and have rules too complicated = anyway it is boards.soapcentral.com

They have people in Canada post about shows that air there a day ahead of US and I read the spoilers and gossip.

I have been spending more time on http://www.epinions.com looking for things to review and rating other reviews.

I am also on twitter often, cafemom, and friendfeed. Have to go to amazon since a dinosaur book of my sons broke this AM as he stepped out of car at camp pkg lot.

Well, I like to frequent the forums, those at Suite101, Travelwriters and others, but they are only fun if they are busy. I check the news headlines at Yahoo!, check my e-mail about every 10 minutes and Facebook and Myspace in the evenings.

I need more fun favorites to check each day like you. :P

If certain websites (Fark, Reddit, ICHCB) didn’t exist, I’d get around 200 times more work done. On the other hand, if those sites didn’t exist, I might not ever know that 1) Florida is a cesspool 2) the mainstream media is out to get Obama, and 3) Cats speak a little like Borat.

Isn’t life more interesting knowing that sort of trivia? ;)

I think that my biggest drain is social networking sites, they cause no end of distraction for me when it comes to doing work, just a quick log in never is.
