Not Fond of Carpet
I don’t like carpet. Carpet holds dirt, blood, vomit, wine, urine, dust mites…all manner of germs, in my book. Carpet holds onto bad smells like smoke, doggie scent and even cooking odors. I don’t like having to maintain a stock of various cleaning fluids and powders to clean my carpets and I loath the idea of used carpet on principal ( I’ve seen what older carpet looks like under ultraviolet lights - it’s not a sanitary sight).
All this is by way of saying the house we design won’t have carpet in it. I don’t mind throw rugs, which are easily replaced. But the floors that appeal to me are coated concrete, soft woods that gain character as they age (hard wood flooring is too much work), maybe a bit of tile or slate in spots, and those new environmental wood substitutes. Or possibly bamboo.
I have pages ripped from magazines of flooring ideas in our House Binder.

I totally can’t stand carpet. My daughter & I have allergies to dust, dust mites, pollens - that sort of stuff. Carpets are our enemies. I don’t mind throw rugs - easier to clean & replace.
Carpets ARE the enemy. They must be destroyed. Dan and I have this wretched habit of ripping up carpet wherever we live, whether it’s allowed or not.
I believe that many of the families allergies start with carpets. There is only so much I can do but they are all made out of toxic substances that are harsh for our feet and noses. We have tried to replace as much of our carpet with hardwood as we can and it really has made a difference but there are still many rooms to go. But a spaghetti sauce spill now turns into a quick cleanup instead of a “oh my god” 20 minute ordeal figuring out how to get up the the sauce.
I couldn’t agree more. For me it’s only parquet or stone tiles. I’m allergic to dust and it carpets drive me crazy.
